What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why did Conzelmann think Luke reshaped the tradition into three epochs?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by Salvation History?
Model answer
Salvation History is the understanding that God acts within human history according to a purpose, so that the events of Israel, of Jesus and of the Church form one continuous work of salvation.
- 2
How does Oscar Cullmann describe the shape of Salvation History?
Model answer
Oscar Cullmann argued that biblical time is linear rather than cyclical, and that the coming of Christ is its mid-point, from which the whole line before and after takes its meaning.
- 3
Set out the three epochs Hans Conzelmann found in Luke.
Model answer
Hans Conzelmann divided Luke's scheme into the period of Israel, which closes with John the Baptist, the period of the ministry of Jesus as the middle of time, and the period of the Church running on to the end.
- 4
Why did Conzelmann think Luke reshaped the tradition in this way?
Model answer
Conzelmann argued that Luke wrote when the expected return of Christ had not come, and replaced an imminent end with a history of salvation in which the Church has a period of its own.
- 5
What is meant by Conzelmann's Satan-free period?
Model answer
Conzelmann noted that the devil leaves Jesus until an opportune time after the temptations and returns only when Satan enters Judas, and read the ministry between the two as a time free from satanic assault.
- 6
Give two criticisms of Conzelmann's reading.
Model answer
Critics point out that Satan is plainly at work during the ministry, since Jesus speaks of seeing Satan fall and of a woman bound by Satan for eighteen years, and that Luke retains sayings which still expect a sudden end.
