What does Marcus Aurelius appear to say about Christians in the Meditations?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who was Pliny the Younger and why did he write to Trajan about the Christians?
Model answer
Pliny the Younger was sent by Trajan as governor of Bithynia and Pontus in about AD 111. Pliny wrote because he had never taken part in trials of Christians and was unsure how to proceed, particularly over whether the name itself was punishable.
- 2
What specific questions did Pliny put to the emperor?
Model answer
Pliny asked whether any allowance should be made for age, whether those who recanted should be pardoned, and whether the name of Christian was punishable in itself or only the crimes associated with it. Pliny also mentioned the volume of anonymous accusations he was receiving.
- 3
Describe the procedure Pliny says he followed.
Model answer
Pliny asked the accused three times whether they were Christians, warning them of the penalty, and ordered the execution of those who persisted. Those who were Roman citizens he sent to Rome, and those who denied the charge, invoked the gods, offered incense and wine before the emperor's image and cursed Christ he released.
- 4
What does Pliny report about Christian worship?
Model answer
Pliny says they met before dawn on a fixed day and sang a hymn in turn to Christ as to a god. They bound themselves by an oath not to commit theft, robbery or adultery, not to break their word and not to refuse to return a deposit, and later met again to eat food which was ordinary and harmless.
- 5
What did Pliny discover when he tortured the two deaconesses?
Model answer
Pliny had two female slaves who were called deaconesses examined under torture. He reported that he found nothing beyond a depraved and immoderate superstition, which is significant because torture was expected to reveal the crimes rumour attributed to Christians.
- 6
What social effects of the Christian movement did Pliny describe?
Model answer
Pliny wrote that the contagion had spread through towns, villages and countryside and among people of every age and rank, so that the temples had been almost deserted and sacrificial animals had found few buyers. He added that his measures were already reversing the trend, which was one reason for hoping that leniency would work.
