The Ascension and the Day of Pentecost
- 3 things to know
- AS
Overview
Commission that Jesus gives, ascension itself as Acts records it and feast of Pentecost.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State three ways in which the Ascension is theologically significant for the early Church.
Describe what happened when the day of Pentecost came.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does Acts describe the period between the resurrection and the Ascension?
Model answer
Acts says that Jesus presented himself alive to the apostles by many convincing proofs over forty days. During that time Jesus spoke to them about the kingdom of God.
- 2
What instruction does Jesus give the apostles before he is taken up?
Model answer
Jesus orders them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father, saying that John baptised with water but that they will be baptised with the Holy Spirit within a few days.
- 3
What question do the apostles ask, and what does it reveal?
Model answer
The apostles ask whether this is the time when the kingdom will be restored to Israel. The question shows that they still expect a national deliverance rather than a mission to the nations.
- 4
How does Jesus answer that question?
Model answer
Jesus tells them that it is not for them to know times or dates fixed by the Father's own authority, and turns their attention instead to the power they will receive and the witness they are to give.
- 5
State the commission that Jesus gives, and explain how it shapes the book.
Model answer
Jesus tells them they will be his witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, and Acts then moves in exactly those stages from the city to Samaria and finally to Rome.
- 6
Describe the Ascension itself as Acts records it.
Model answer
As the apostles watched, Jesus was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight. Two men in white robes asked why they stood looking into heaven, and said that he would come in the same way as they had seen him go.
