Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What were Ezekiel's circumstances when he was called?
Model answer
Ezekiel was a priest deported to Babylonia in 597 BCE with King Jehoiachin and living among the exiles at Tel-abib by the river Chebar. His call came in the fifth year of that exile, while Jerusalem still stood.
- 2
What is the meaning of eating the scroll?
Model answer
Ezekiel is given a scroll written on both sides with words of lamentation, mourning and woe, and is told to eat it. In his mouth it is as sweet as honey, so the message of judgement is fully internalised before it is spoken.
- 3
How does Ezekiel's priestly background shape his prophecy?
Model answer
Ezekiel thinks in the categories of the sanctuary, so his charges concern defilement, abomination and the profaning of God's holy name, and his hope takes the form of cleansing and a restored temple. The glory of the LORD, which a priest served, is the central image of his visions.
- 4
What is condemned in Ezekiel 6:1-14?
Model answer
Ezekiel prophesies against the mountains of Israel and the high places, whose altars will be laid waste and incense stands broken. The slain will be thrown down before their idols and their bones scattered around the altars.
- 5
Explain the image of the whitewashed wall.
Model answer
The people build a flimsy wall and the prophets cover it with whitewash so that it looks sound. A deluge of rain, hailstones and a stormy wind will bring it down, exposing the concealment.
- 6
How does Ezekiel 16 tell the story of Jerusalem?
Model answer
Jerusalem is depicted as an abandoned newborn, of Amorite and Hittite parentage, cast out in the open field until God passes by and says live. God cares for her, enters into covenant with her and adorns her, and she then uses those gifts on other lovers and on images.
