Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Which is the earliest surviving Irish penitential?

    Model answer

The penitential attributed to Finnian, from the middle of the sixth century, is the earliest to survive. It is generally connected with Finnian of Clonard, although some scholars argue for Finnian of Moville.

  2. 2

    How is Finnian's penitential arranged?

    Model answer

Finnian's text is a series of about fifty canons dealing with particular offences and prescribing the penance for each. Clerics and laypeople are treated separately, with heavier penalties for clergy.

  3. 3

What is distinctive about Finnian's treatment of sins of thought?

    Model answer

Finnian begins with sin in the heart, prescribing penance for the person who has intended an evil act but has not carried it out. Interior consent is therefore treated as a genuine sin requiring remedy.

  4. 4

Which areas of conduct does Finnian's penitential chiefly address?

    Model answer

The canons deal at length with sexual offences, with violence and killing, with theft and with recourse to magic and spells. Failings specific to clergy, such as breaking a vow of continence, are treated with particular severity.

  5. 5

What remedies other than fasting does Finnian allow?

    Model answer

Finnian directs that the sinner should practise the contrary virtue and, in some cases, make satisfaction through almsgiving or by supporting those he has harmed. Restoration to the injured party is part of the cure.

  6. 6

When and for whom did Columbanus write his penitential?

    Model answer

Columbanus compiled his penitential around the year 600 for his monasteries in Gaul. It is therefore an Irish text written for a continental setting and for both religious and lay penitents.
