- 3 things to know

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does the rule of faith contain?
How did the rule of faith answer the Gnostic use of scripture?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the rule of faith?
Model answer
The rule of faith is a summary of the essential content of Christian belief, taught to candidates for baptism and professed by them. In the second century it was a consistent pattern of teaching rather than a fixed verbal formula, and different writers give it in slightly different words.
- 2
What does the rule of faith contain?
Model answer
The rule affirms one God the Father, maker of heaven and earth, and one Lord Jesus Christ, born, crucified under Pontius Pilate, raised, ascended and coming to judge, together with the Holy Spirit who spoke through the prophets. It also affirms the resurrection of the flesh, which was precisely what the Gnostics denied.
- 3
How did the rule of faith answer the Gnostic use of scripture?
Model answer
The Gnostics quoted the same books but arranged them within a different story, so the church needed a statement of what the scriptures were about. The rule provided the framework within which the texts were to be read, so that a reading which contradicted it was ruled out however ingenious it was.
- 4
What image does Irenaeus use to explain the misuse of scripture?
Model answer
Irenaeus compares the scriptures to a mosaic portrait of a king made of precious stones. He says that the heretics take the stones apart and rearrange them into the shape of a fox or a dog, and then insist that this is the original picture.
- 5
Why did the church need to define a canon of scripture?
Model answer
Marcion produced a drastically shortened Bible and the Gnostics produced new gospels and revelations under apostolic names. The church therefore had to say which writings carried apostolic authority, since arguments about doctrine had become arguments about which books could be quoted.
- 6
What criteria were used in recognising books as scripture?
Model answer
The main tests were apostolic origin, whether directly or through a companion of an apostle, agreement with the rule of faith, and long and widespread use in the churches. The process was one of recognising books already in use rather than of conferring authority on them.
