- 1
What is the Didache?
Model answer
The Didache, or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, is a short church manual usually dated to about AD 100 and rediscovered in 1873. It gives the earliest surviving instructions on baptism, fasting, prayer and the Eucharist outside the New Testament.
- 2
What does the Didache prescribe about the water used in baptism?
Model answer
The Didache directs that baptism be in living water, that is running water such as a stream. If running water is unavailable, other water may be used, and if cold water is unavailable, warm water may be used.
- 3
What does the Didache allow where there is insufficient water for immersion?
Model answer
The Didache permits water to be poured three times on the head in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The concession is the earliest evidence that immersion, though normal, was not thought essential to a valid baptism.
- 4
How does Justin Martyr describe Christian initiation in his First Apology?
Model answer
Justin says that those persuaded of the truth of the teaching are taught to pray and fast for the forgiveness of their sins, and are then led to water and washed in the name of the Father and Lord of the universe, of Jesus Christ and of the Holy Spirit. Only after this may they join the assembly and receive the Eucharist for the first time.
- 5
What name does Justin give to baptism, and why?
Model answer
Justin calls the washing illumination, because those who receive it are enlightened in their understanding. He also appeals to the saying that unless a person is born again they cannot enter the kingdom of heaven, so baptism is presented as a new birth.
- 6
What is the Apostolic Tradition, and what caution attaches to it?
Model answer
The Apostolic Tradition is a church order describing initiation, ordination and the Eucharist, traditionally attributed to Hippolytus of Rome and dated to about AD 215. Scholars such as Paul Bradshaw have argued that it is a composite document from several periods, so its details should be used with care.
