Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who was Colmcille and to which royal kindred did he belong?
Model answer
Colmcille, also called Columba, lived from about 521 to 597 and belonged to the Cenél Conaill of the northern Uí Néill, which gave him standing with kings on both sides of the Irish Sea.
- 2
When did Colmcille leave Ireland and what did he found?
Model answer
Colmcille left Ireland in 563 with twelve companions and founded the monastery of Iona in Dál Riata, which became the mother house of a wide paruchia.
- 3
Which source gives the fullest account of Colmcille, and what are its limits?
Model answer
Adomnán's Vita Columbae, written on Iona around a century after the saint's death, gives the fullest account, but it is arranged as prophecies, miracles and angelic visions rather than as a chronicle and was written to exalt Iona.
- 4
What tradition connects Colmcille's departure with the battle of Cúl Dreimne?
Model answer
A later Irish tradition makes the exile a penance imposed after the battle of Cúl Dreimne in 561, though Adomnán says nothing of any such penance and modern historians treat the story with caution.
- 5
Name two political acts of Colmcille recorded by Adomnán.
Model answer
Adomnán records Colmcille ordaining Áedán mac Gabráin as king of Dál Riata, the first such rite reported in these islands, and attending the convention of Druim Cett around 575.
- 6
What was Colmcille's work among the Picts?
Model answer
Colmcille travelled to the court of the Pictish king Bridei near the Great Glen and, in Adomnán's telling, overcame the king's druids, opening the way for Ionan monks to work in Pictland.
