Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
Model answer
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the statement of thirty articles adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 setting out the rights held to belong to all members of the human family.
- 2
Why was the Universal Declaration drafted when it was?
Model answer
The Declaration was drafted in the aftermath of the Second World War and the Holocaust, in the conviction that the atrocities of those years had been possible because there was no agreed standard above the state.
- 3
State the cultural relativist critique of universal rights.
Model answer
Cultural critics argue that the rights framework reflects Western individualism and was drafted largely by Western powers, so applying it globally imposes one civilisation's values on others.
- 4
How is the emphasis on community used to criticise the rights framework?
Model answer
Critics from African and Asian traditions argue that a scheme built on individual claims undervalues family, community and duty, and that some declarations of rights are better framed alongside responsibilities.
- 5
Give a religious critique of the Universal Declaration.
Model answer
Some Muslim states argued that the Declaration did not take sufficient account of religious law, and the Cairo Declaration of 1990 set out human rights within an explicitly Islamic framework.
- 6
Give the reply made to the charge that human rights are a Western imposition.
Model answer
Defenders reply that the drafting committee included members from China, Lebanon and Chile, that India's Hansa Mehta helped shape the text on the Commission on Human Rights, and that the loudest appeals to human rights come from dissidents within the societies said to reject them.
