What does Hajj mean to those who make it?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who is obliged to perform Hajj?
Model answer
Surah 3 lays the pilgrimage on every Muslim who is able to make the journey, which the scholars understand as being of sound mind and body, able to meet the cost without depriving dependants, and able to travel in safety; it is required once in a lifetime.
- 2
Distinguish Hajj from Umrah.
Model answer
Hajj is the greater pilgrimage, performed only in the appointed days of Dhul-Hijjah and including the standing at Arafat, while Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage of tawaf and sa'i which may be made at any time of year and does not discharge the obligation.
- 3
Define ihram.
Model answer
Ihram is the state of consecration a pilgrim enters at the appointed boundary, marked for men by two unstitched white cloths and for women by ordinary modest dress, and it is entered with the intention and the talbiyah, the pilgrim's answer that he has come at God's call; the plain cloths strip away every mark of wealth and rank and resemble the shroud in which a Muslim is buried.
- 4
What is forbidden to a pilgrim in ihram?
Model answer
A pilgrim in ihram may not cut hair or nails, use perfume, hunt or harm living things, engage in sexual relations, or quarrel and argue.
- 5
Describe the tawaf.
Model answer
Tawaf is the circling of the Ka'bah seven times anticlockwise, beginning and ending at the Black Stone, which pilgrims kiss, touch or salute from a distance as the crowd allows.
- 6
Describe the sa'i and state what it recalls.
Model answer
The sa'i is the hurrying seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, recalling Hajar's desperate search for water for her infant son Isma'il, which ended when the spring of Zamzam was given to them.
