Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the problem of personal identity?
Model answer
It is the question of what makes a person at one time the same person as at another, and therefore what would have to survive for it to be you who lives on.
- 2
State the bodily criterion of identity.
Model answer
On the bodily criterion a person is the same person as long as it is the same living body, or on a narrower version the same brain.
- 3
State the memory criterion.
Model answer
Locke's view that personal identity consists in continuity of consciousness, so a person is the same person as far back as their memory reaches.
- 4
Give one objection to the memory criterion.
Model answer
Reid's brave officer objection: an old general remembers being a young officer who remembers being a flogged boy, but the general does not remember the boy. Identity is transitive but memory is not, so the memory criterion makes the general both the same person as the boy and not the same person.
- 5
What is meant by immortality of the soul?
Model answer
It is the view that a non-physical soul survives the death of the body and continues to exist without it.
- 6
What is meant by resurrection?
Model answer
Resurrection is the raising of the whole embodied person to new life by God, rather than the survival of a part.
