Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe how the Qur'an is divided.

    Model answer

The Qur'an is divided into 114 surahs, each made up of verses called ayat, and for purposes of recitation it is also divided into thirty roughly equal parts called juz'.

  2. 2

On what principle are the surahs arranged?

    Model answer

After the short opening surah the surahs stand broadly in order of decreasing length, so the arrangement is not chronological and a Medinan surah may precede a Meccan one.

  3. 3

Describe al-Fatihah and the place it holds in Muslim worship.

    Model answer

Al-Fatihah is the seven-verse opening surah, a prayer for guidance along the straight path, and it is recited in every unit of every prescribed prayer, making it the most frequently repeated passage in Muslim life.

  4. 4

With what words does a surah normally begin?

    Model answer

A surah normally begins with the Bismillah, in the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and Surah 9 is the single exception.

  5. 5

Name the longest and the shortest surahs.

    Model answer

Al-Baqarah is the longest surah with 286 verses, and al-Kawthar the shortest with three.

  6. 6

State three features of the surahs revealed at Mecca.

    Model answer

The Meccan surahs are generally short, rhythmic and highly charged in style, and they concentrate on the oneness of God, the resurrection and judgement, and the fate of earlier peoples who rejected their prophets.
