Why does the doctrine of double effect not permit a direct abortion to save the mother?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by therapeutic abortion?
Model answer
Therapeutic abortion is the ending of a pregnancy in order to protect the life or health of the woman rather than for social reasons.
- 2
Why does an ectopic pregnancy raise an acute moral problem?
Model answer
In an ectopic pregnancy the embryo implants outside the womb, where it cannot survive and where continued growth threatens the woman's life, so both continuing and ending the pregnancy involve a death.
- 3
Which theologian first formulated the doctrine of double effect?
Model answer
Thomas Aquinas formulated the doctrine of double effect in the Summa Theologiae, in his discussion of killing in self-defence.
- 4
State the four conditions of the doctrine of double effect.
Model answer
The act itself must be good or morally neutral, the bad effect must be foreseen but not intended, the good effect must not be produced by means of the bad effect, and there must be a proportionate reason for permitting the harm.
- 5
Apply the doctrine of double effect to an ectopic pregnancy.
Model answer
Removing the damaged section of the fallopian tube is treated as an operation on a diseased organ whose good effect is saving the woman's life, with the death of the embryo foreseen but not intended.
- 6
Why does the doctrine of double effect not permit a direct abortion to save the mother?
Model answer
In a direct abortion the death of the fetus is the means by which the woman is saved, which breaks the condition that the good effect must not be produced by the bad one.
