How reliable is the tradition about Enda?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is Enda traditionally credited with?
Model answer
Enda is remembered as the founder of a monastery at Killeany on Inishmore in the Aran Islands, at the very end of the fifth century or the beginning of the sixth. Tradition presents him as the earliest of the great Irish monastic founders.
- 2
What does tradition say about Enda's earlier life and training?
Model answer
Enda is described as a warrior who abandoned fighting for the religious life, and is said to have trained in Britain before returning. Aran became known as Aran of the Saints because of the many later founders said to have studied there.
- 3
How reliable is the tradition about Enda?
Model answer
The surviving Life of Enda is medieval and much later than his lifetime, and it is built largely on the standard conventions of hagiography. Historians therefore accept the existence of an early foundation on Aran while treating the details of his career as uncertain.
- 4
Why is Finnian of Clonard called the tutor of the saints of Ireland?
Model answer
Finnian founded Clonard in Meath in the first half of the sixth century and made it the leading school of its day. Irish tradition names the most famous founders of the next generation as his pupils, calling them the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
- 5
What is Finnian's other great contribution?
Model answer
Finnian is credited with the earliest surviving Irish penitential. That text set the pattern of private, tariffed penance that Irish monks then carried across Europe.
- 6
What did Brigit found, and how was it organised?
Model answer
Brigit founded Kildare, the church of the oak, in the late fifth or early sixth century. Kildare was a double community of women and men, governed by the abbess, with Bishop Conláed providing the episcopal functions.
