What does Islam teach about suicide?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the Qur'an teach about the sanctity of life?
Model answer
Surah 5 says that whoever kills a soul, other than for murder or corruption in the land, is as though he had killed all humanity, and whoever saves a life is as though he had saved all humanity.
- 2
Why do Muslims say that life is not the individual's to dispose of?
Model answer
Muslims hold that life is a trust given by God, who alone gives and takes it, and that no soul dies except by His permission and at an appointed term, so ending a life is a usurpation of God's authority rather than an exercise of personal autonomy.
- 3
What is the significance of ensoulment in Muslim discussion of abortion?
Model answer
A widely cited hadith describes the stages of development in the womb and the breathing in of the spirit, which most scholars place at one hundred and twenty days, and after that point the great majority hold abortion to be the taking of a human life.
- 4
How do the schools differ on abortion before that point?
Model answer
The Hanafi school has been the most permissive, allowing abortion in the early stages for a recognised reason, the Maliki school the most restrictive, treating the embryo as protected from conception, with the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools between them.
- 5
When is abortion agreed to be permitted?
Model answer
Scholars across the schools permit abortion at any stage to save the mother's life, on the reasoning that her life is established and certain while the child's is not, and that of two harms the lesser is chosen.
- 6
What positions have scholars taken on abortion after rape or severe abnormality?
Model answer
Rulings differ: some jurists have permitted abortion in the early period for a pregnancy resulting from rape, notably in rulings given for Bosnian women in the 1990s, and some permit it where the child cannot survive, while others hold that the child bears no guilt for the manner of its conception and refuse both.
