Overview
Three churches built under Constantine's patronage and main scholarly positions on Constantine's conversion.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name three churches built under Constantine's patronage.
How is the delay of Constantine's baptism until his deathbed usually explained?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What financial and legal privileges did Constantine grant the church?
Model answer
Constantine ordered the restoration of property confiscated during the persecution and made grants of money to churches. Clergy were exempted from the burdensome civic duties owed by men of property, and from AD 321 churches were allowed to receive legacies.
- 2
What did Constantine's law about Sunday require?
Model answer
In AD 321 Constantine ordered that the courts and the people of the towns should rest on the day of the Sun, while allowing agricultural work to continue. The law used the traditional pagan name of the day, which is one of the ambiguities of his religious policy.
- 3
What judicial powers were given to bishops?
Model answer
Bishops were allowed to hear civil cases where the parties agreed, and their judgments were given the force of law. Slaves could also be formally freed in church before a bishop, which gave the clergy a recognised place in public administration.
- 4
Name three churches built under Constantine's patronage.
Model answer
Constantine founded the basilica at the Lateran and the church over the tomb of Peter in Rome, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Churches were also built at Bethlehem and on the Mount of Olives, and his mother Helena was closely associated with the Palestinian foundations.
- 5
How did Constantine involve himself in the church's internal disputes?
Model answer
When African Christians appealed to him over the disputed election at Carthage, Constantine referred the case to bishops and then summoned the Council of Arles in AD 314. Constantine later called the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, paid for the bishops' travel and attended in person.
- 6
How did Constantine describe his own position in relation to the church?
Model answer
Eusebius reports him saying that whereas the bishops were bishops of those within the church, he was appointed by God as a bishop of those outside it. The remark shows an emperor who saw the care of religion as part of his imperial duty.
