Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is hagiography?

    Model answer

Hagiography is writing about the saints, above all the vita or Life of a saint. It is written to edify readers, promote a cult and defend a church's claims rather than to establish facts in the modern historical sense.

  2. 2

What conventional pattern does a saint's Life follow?

    Model answer

A Life typically moves from a prophesied or portentous birth, through childhood signs and ascetic training, to the founding of churches, contests with kings or druids, miracles of healing and provision, prophecy, a foreseen death and posthumous wonders. The pattern is largely fixed before the writer begins.

  3. 3

What use do the Lives make of the Bible?

    Model answer

The saints are presented in terms drawn from scripture, so that a saint multiplies food, calms a storm, raises the dead or confronts a king as the prophets and apostles did. Biblical typology, rather than distinctive detail, is what establishes sanctity.

  4. 4

Who was Cogitosus, and when did he write?

    Model answer

Cogitosus was a monk of Kildare who wrote a Life of Brigit around the middle of the seventh century at the request of his community. His work is the earliest surviving Irish saint's Life.

  5. 5

How is Cogitosus's Life of Brigit arranged?

    Model answer

The Life is a sequence of miracle stories rather than a chronological narrative. Episodes of healing, provision and protection are set one after another, framed by a prologue and a closing description of Kildare.

  6. 6

Give three miracles associated with Brigit in the Life.

    Model answer

Brigit multiplies butter and milk for the poor, heals those who are blind or unable to speak, and hangs her wet cloak on a sunbeam. Other episodes show her protecting a fugitive and restoring a woman who had broken her vow.
