What question divided the Muslim community at the Prophet's death?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What question divided the Muslim community at the Prophet's death?
Model answer
The community had to decide who should lead it and on what basis, since the Prophet left no surviving son and no arrangement that all parties agreed had settled the matter.
- 2
What happened at Saqifah?
Model answer
Leading Muhajirun and Ansar met at the covered hall of Saqifah in Medina and gave their allegiance to Abu Bakr as caliph, a decision made while Ali and the Prophet's immediate family were occupied with the burial.
- 3
State the Sunni understanding of the caliphate.
Model answer
Sunni Muslims hold that leadership passes to the most suitable member of the community, recognised by consultation and the allegiance of its leading men, and that the caliph inherits the Prophet's political authority but neither his prophethood nor any special access to revelation.
- 4
State the Shi'a understanding of leadership.
Model answer
Shi'a Muslims hold that leadership was designated by God through the Prophet and belongs to Ali and to his descendants, and that the Imam carries spiritual as well as political authority, including an authoritative understanding of the Qur'an.
- 5
What is the event of Ghadir Khumm?
Model answer
At the pool of Khumm, returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet took Ali by the hand and declared that whoever held him as their mawla should hold Ali as their mawla; Shi'a Muslims read this as an appointment to succeed him, while Sunni Muslims read the word as friend or protector and see in it an affirmation of Ali's standing rather than an investiture.

Name the four Rightly Guided Caliphs and their order.
Model answer
The four Rightly Guided Caliphs are Abu Bakr, Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan and Ali ibn Abi Talib, who governed in that order between 632 and 661.
