The Temple sermon, the broken covenant and the new covenant
- 3 things to know
- A2
Overview
Jeremiah's attack on false confidence in the Temple, the charge of a broken covenant, and the promise of a covenant written on the heart.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does Psalm 44 sit awkwardly beside Jeremiah's preaching?
How do Jewish and Christian readings of Jeremiah 31 differ?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Where is the Temple sermon delivered, and to whom?
Model answer
Jeremiah is told to stand in the gate of the LORD's house and speak to all the people of Judah entering to worship. The audience is therefore the worshipping public at the moment of their devotion.
- 2
What are the deceptive words Jeremiah attacks?
Model answer
Jeremiah tells the people not to trust in the words, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD. The threefold repetition mocks a slogan used as a guarantee of safety.
- 3
Explain the phrase den of robbers in Jeremiah 7:11.
Model answer
Jeremiah asks whether the house called by God's name has become a den of robbers in their eyes. The image is of a hideout to which criminals retreat between offences rather than a place of repentance.
- 4
What precedent does Jeremiah cite from Shiloh?
Model answer
Jeremiah tells the people to go and see what God did to his place at Shiloh because of the wickedness of Israel. The destruction of an earlier sanctuary proves that a shrine bearing God's name can be abandoned.
- 5
What extraordinary instruction is given in Jeremiah 7:16?
Model answer
Jeremiah is told not to pray for this people, not to raise a cry or prayer on their behalf and not to intercede, because God will not hear him. Intercession, the prophet's usual recourse, is withdrawn.
- 6
What does Jeremiah 7:21-23 say about sacrifice?
Model answer
Jeremiah says that when God brought their ancestors out of Egypt he did not command them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices, but commanded them to obey his voice. Most interpreters read this as a sharp relativising of sacrifice rather than a denial that the sacrificial laws exist.
