Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is distinctive about the way the title Son of Man is used in the Synoptic Gospels?
Model answer
Son of Man appears almost exclusively on the lips of Jesus himself and is used of him by hardly anyone else, which is the reverse of every other title.
- 2
Give the ordinary Semitic background to the phrase son of man.
Model answer
In Hebrew and Aramaic the phrase means simply a human being, and it is used repeatedly of the prophet in Ezekiel and of humanity in the psalms.
- 3
What is the significance of Daniel 7 for the title Son of Man?
Model answer
Daniel describes one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven and receiving dominion, glory and an everlasting kingdom, which supplies an exalted and apocalyptic background to the phrase.
- 4
Into which three groups are the Son of Man sayings usually divided?
Model answer
The sayings are usually grouped into those about the earthly work of Jesus, those about his coming suffering and rising, and those about his future coming in glory.
- 5
Why might Jesus have preferred this title to Messiah?
Model answer
Son of Man was not a fixed title of popular expectation, so it could be filled with the meaning Jesus gave it without arousing the nationalist and military hopes attached to the word Messiah.
- 6
What did Rudolf Bultmann argue about the authenticity of the Son of Man sayings?
Model answer
Rudolf Bultmann held that only the sayings about a future coming go back to Jesus, and that in these Jesus spoke of a coming figure other than himself, the identification being made later by the Church.
