Ezekiel after the fall: individual responsibility and future hope
- 3 things to know
- A2
Overview
Vision of the valley of dry bones and vision of the dry bones.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does Ezekiel 33 present individual responsibility?
What does God undertake to do in Ezekiel 34:11-16?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the sentinel's duty in Ezekiel 33:1-9?
Model answer
A sentinel who sees the sword coming and blows the trumpet has discharged his duty, and anyone who ignores the warning bears his own blood. A sentinel who fails to blow the trumpet is answerable for the life that is lost.
- 2
State the principle of Ezekiel 33:11.
Model answer
God declares that he has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked should turn from their ways and live. Judgement is therefore presented as unwanted by the judge.
- 3
How does Ezekiel 33 present individual responsibility?
Model answer
Past righteousness will not save a person who turns to wrongdoing, and past wickedness will not condemn one who turns away from it. Standing before God is determined by the present direction of a life rather than by its record.
- 4
What charge does Ezekiel 34 bring against the shepherds of Israel?
Model answer
The shepherds have fed themselves rather than the sheep, eating the fat, wearing the wool and slaughtering the fatlings. They have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bound up the injured, brought back the strayed or sought the lost, but have ruled with force and harshness.
- 5
What does God undertake to do in Ezekiel 34:11-16?
Model answer
God declares that he himself will search for his sheep and seek them out, gather them from the peoples and feed them on good pasture. God will seek the lost, bring back the strayed, bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, and will feed them with justice.
- 6
What kind of leadership does Ezekiel 34 promise?
Model answer
God promises to set up one shepherd over the flock, his servant David, and to make with them a covenant of peace. Leadership is thereby redefined as care for the weakest rather than as the enjoyment of office.
