An Introduction to the Acts of the Apostles
Philip the evangelist and the mission to Samaria
- 3 things to know
- AS
Overview
Philip's preaching in Samaria, Simon Magus, and the encounter with the Ethiopian official on the Gaza road.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What became of Philip after he baptised the Ethiopian?
Who was Simon the magician?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What did Philip do in the city of Samaria?
Model answer
Philip proclaimed the Messiah to the Samaritans, unclean spirits came out of many, paralysed and lame people were cured, the crowds listened eagerly, and there was great joy in that city.
- 2
Why is the Samaritan mission a significant step?
Model answer
Samaritans stood outside the Jewish community and were despised by it, so preaching to them crosses the first great social boundary and takes the commission to its second named stage.
- 3
Who was Simon the magician?
Model answer
Simon had practised magic in the city and astounded the Samaritans, who called him the power of God that is called Great, and Acts says that he himself believed and was baptised and stayed with Philip.
- 4
Why were Peter and John sent from Jerusalem?
Model answer
Peter and John were sent because the Samaritans had been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus but had not yet received the Holy Spirit, and the two apostles prayed and laid hands on them.
- 5
Why does Luke delay the giving of the Spirit until the apostles arrive?
Model answer
The delay allows the Jerusalem apostles to recognise the Samaritan believers publicly, so that the church's first expansion produces one community rather than two rival ones.
- 6
What did Simon ask for, and how did Peter answer?
Model answer
Simon offered money for the power to give the Spirit by the laying on of hands, and Peter told him his silver would perish with him, that his heart was not right before God, and that he must repent of his wickedness.
