- 3 things to know
- A2
Overview
Value of Galatians for the early church and code for living.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Reconcile Paul's instruction to bear one another's burdens (6:2) with his statement that each will bear their own load (6:5).
Who is the object of Christian generosity according to Galatians 6:10?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does Paul mean when he says in Galatians 5:1 that Christ has set us free for freedom?
Model answer
Paul means that liberation from the law's condemnation and from the elemental powers is the purpose of Christ's work, not a side effect. The Galatians are therefore told to stand firm and not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
- 2
How does Paul guard his teaching on freedom against misuse in Galatians 5:13?
Model answer
Paul tells the Galatians not to use their freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love to become slaves to one another. Freedom is redirected into service rather than into self-indulgence.
- 3
Why is it striking that Paul says in Galatians 5:14 that the whole law is fulfilled in one command?
Model answer
Paul quotes Leviticus 19:18, that you shall love your neighbour as yourself, and calls it the fulfilment of the whole law. Paul is therefore not dismissing the law's moral content but arguing that love achieves what the law was aiming at.
- 4
What does Paul mean by “the flesh” in Galatians 5:16–17?
Model answer
For Paul the flesh is human nature turned in on itself and set against God, not the physical body as such. The flesh and the Spirit are described as opposed forces desiring against each other, so that the believer does not simply do as they please.
- 5
Why does the shape of the list of the works of the flesh matter for reading Paul?
Model answer
The list mixes sexual and religious offences with quarrelling, rivalry, dissension and party spirit. Since the Galatian churches were dividing over the law, Paul is implying that their factionalism is itself a work of the flesh.
- 6
List the fruit of the Spirit given in Galatians 5:22–23.
Model answer
Paul lists love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Paul calls them the fruit of the Spirit rather than works, and uses a singular noun for all nine.
