Islam in a Contemporary Context
The holy books before the Qur'an
- 3 things to know
- A2
Overview
Scriptures the Qur'an identifies, ahl al-Kitab and common Word Between Us and You.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the scriptures the Qur'an identifies.
Define the Ahl al-Kitab.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is belief in the earlier scriptures an article of faith?
Model answer
Muslims are required to believe in what was sent down to Muhammad and in what was sent down before him, because the same God sent the same essential message through a succession of prophets, so denying the earlier revelations would deny God's consistency.
- 2
Name the scriptures the Qur'an identifies.
Model answer
The Qur'an names the scrolls of Ibrahim, the Tawrat given to Musa, the Zabur given to Dawud, the Injil given to Isa, and the Qur'an itself.
- 3
Define the Ahl al-Kitab.
Model answer
The Ahl al-Kitab, the People of the Book, are those who received an earlier revealed scripture, principally Jews and Christians, and Islamic law gave them a recognised status distinct from that of idolaters.
- 4
Define tahrif.
Model answer
Tahrif is the alteration of the earlier scriptures, which the Qur'an charges some of their custodians with, and Muslim scholars have differed over whether it means that the wording of the texts was corrupted or that their meaning was distorted in transmission and interpretation.
- 5
In what sense is the Qur'an said to guard the earlier books?
Model answer
Surah 5 describes the Qur'an as confirming the scripture that came before it and as a guardian over it, so Muslims read the Qur'an as the criterion by which earlier revelation is to be judged and its true content recognised.
- 6
Do Muslims identify the Injil with the four Gospels?
Model answer
Muslims believe that Isa was given a revelation called the Injil, but they do not identify it with the four Gospels of the New Testament, which they regard as accounts written about him by others rather than as the book given to him.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
