Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who was Marcion, and what became of him at Rome?
Model answer
Marcion was a wealthy shipowner from Sinope in Pontus who came to Rome about AD 140 and made a large gift to the church there. Marcion was excommunicated in AD 144, his money was returned, and he then organised a rival church with its own bishops which survived for centuries.
- 2
What did Marcion teach about the two gods?
Model answer
Marcion distinguished the just and severe creator God of the Old Testament from the previously unknown God of pure love and mercy revealed in Jesus Christ. The Old Testament was true in his view, but it was the record of the lesser god and not Christian scripture.
- 3
What was the Antitheses?
Model answer
The Antitheses was Marcion's own work setting passages of the Old Testament against sayings of Jesus and of Paul in order to prove that they could not describe the same God. The work does not survive and is known chiefly from Tertullian's reply.
- 4
What canon did Marcion produce?
Model answer
Marcion accepted only an edited version of Luke's Gospel and ten letters of Paul, excluding the letters to Timothy and Titus. Marcion also removed passages he regarded as Judaising interpolations, holding that Paul alone had understood the gospel.
- 5
What kind of Christology and ethics did Marcionism involve?
Model answer
Because Christ belonged to the good God and not to the creator, Marcion denied that he was born and held that he appeared as a grown man in the reign of Tiberius in the likeness of a body. His followers practised a severe asceticism, requiring celibacy of the baptised and abstaining from meat and wine.
- 6
How did Marcion's challenge affect the formation of the canon?
Model answer
Adolf von Harnack argued that Marcion forced the church to define which books were scripture and so produced the New Testament. Most scholars now hold that a collection of gospels and Pauline letters was already forming, and that Marcion accelerated and sharpened a process rather than beginning it.
