An Introduction to the Acts of the Apostles
Discipline in the church and the role of miracles in the spread of the Gospel
- 3 things to know
- AS
Overview
Moral difficulty the episode raises, healing at the Beautiful Gate and what happened in the prison at Philippi.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does Acts summarise the apostles' healing ministry in Jerusalem?
What happened to Paul and Silas at Philippi after the slave girl was freed?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What did Ananias and Sapphira do?
Model answer
Ananias and Sapphira sold a piece of property and, with his wife's full knowledge, Ananias kept back part of the proceeds while presenting the remainder as though it were the whole.
- 2
How does Peter identify their sin?
Model answer
Peter says that Satan has filled Ananias's heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and that since the property and the money were his own to dispose of, the offence is not the withholding but the deceit, which was against God and not against people.
- 3
What effect did the episode have?
Model answer
Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard of these things, and Acts places the story immediately before a fresh account of the apostles' power.
- 4
Which episode from the scriptures of Israel is often compared with this one?
Model answer
Readers frequently compare the story of Achan in the book of Joshua. Achan kept back part of what was devoted to God at the beginning of the conquest and brought disaster on the whole community.
- 5
Why is the need for discipline presented so sharply at this point in the narrative?
Model answer
The deceit strikes at the honesty of a community whose common life is its public witness, and Luke places the warning at the foundation of the church rather than later.
- 6
State the moral difficulty the episode raises, and one response to it.
Model answer
The penalty appears out of all proportion to the offence, and no opportunity for repentance is offered. One response is that Luke reports a death he attributes to God's judgement without presenting Peter as its agent or as pronouncing sentence.
