Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was the importance of the penitentials within the Irish church?
Model answer
The penitentials gave confessors a practical handbook and made regular confession and absolution available to ordinary Christians. Forgiveness thereby became a repeatable part of ordinary religious life rather than a single crisis.
- 2
How did the penitentials affect society?
Model answer
The penitentials supplied a detailed moral code covering marriage, violence, honesty in dealing and the treatment of dependants, applied to everyone rather than only to monks. Alongside secular law they became a means by which the church shaped behaviour.
- 3
How did the penitentials interact with Irish law?
Model answer
Both systems worked by fixed tariffs and by compensation graded according to status, so the penitential fitted a society already accustomed to reckoning obligations in that way. The church nevertheless added the demand for interior repentance, which the law did not.
- 4
Why are the penitentials valuable to historians?
Model answer
The penitentials describe ordinary life in a level of detail no other source of the period supplies, covering food and drink, sexual behaviour, medicine, magic, work and the treatment of slaves. They are among the very few sources that speak about the laity at all.
- 5
What is the chief limitation of the penitentials as historical evidence?
Model answer
The penitentials are prescriptive rather than descriptive, recording what a confessor should do if a sin is confessed, not what people actually did or how often. The appearance of an offence proves that it was thought possible, not that it was common.
- 6
What further problem arises from the way the texts were composed?
Model answer
Later penitentials copy extensively from earlier ones, so a canon may have been inherited rather than written for the society in which the manuscript was produced. The presence of a rule therefore says less about local conditions than it appears to.
