Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Name the five daily prayers and their times.

    Model answer

The five prayers are Fajr at dawn before sunrise, Zuhr after the sun passes its height, Asr in the late afternoon, Maghrib just after sunset and Isha at night.

  2. 2

    Where does Salat originate?

    Model answer

Muslims trace the five daily prayers to the Night Journey and Ascension, when the obligation was given to Muhammad, and Surah 4 states that prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed times.

  3. 3

    Describe wudu.

    Model answer

Wudu is the washing before prayer: the hands, then the mouth and nose, the face, the arms to the elbows, the wiping of the head and ears, and the feet to the ankles, each part usually three times and in that order, begun with the intention and the name of God.

  4. 4

When are ghusl and tayammum required?

    Model answer

Ghusl, the washing of the whole body, is required after major impurity and is customary before Friday prayer and the two Eids, while tayammum is the symbolic use of clean earth or dust when no water is available or its use would cause harm.

  5. 5

What conditions must be met before Salat?

    Model answer

The worshipper must be in a state of ritual purity, on clean ground, decently covered, facing the qiblah towards the Ka'bah, praying within the appointed time and having formed the intention to pray.

  6. 6

Describe the actions of one rak'ah.

    Model answer

A rak'ah begins standing with the takbir, God is greatest, and the recitation of al-Fatihah with a further passage of the Qur'an; the worshipper then bows, straightens, prostrates with forehead to the ground, sits, and prostrates a second time; the last sitting of the prayer adds the tashahhud and the blessing on the Prophet, and the prayer closes with the greeting of peace turned to right and left.
