Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What issues arise in interpreting a religious text?
Model answer
An interpreter must settle questions of authorship, date and literary genre, cross the distance between an ancient culture and a modern one, decide what authority the text carries, and determine who within the community has the right to say what it means.
- 2
Why does the genre of a passage matter for its interpretation?
Model answer
A poem, a parable, a law, a chronicle and an apocalypse make different kinds of claim, so treating one as another produces a misreading whichever direction the mistake runs.
- 3
State the strengths of a literal approach to scripture.
Model answer
A literal approach keeps the text's authority independent of shifting scholarly fashion, gives a community a clear and public standard, and refuses to let the reader select only what is congenial.
- 4
State the difficulties of a literal approach.
Model answer
A literal approach has to explain divergent accounts of the same event, flattens the variety of literary forms in the text, and can leave a community defending ancient social arrangements as though they were revealed.
- 5
What is meant by a propositional and a non-propositional view of revelation?
Model answer
A propositional view treats revelation as truths communicated by God and recorded in the text, while a non-propositional view treats the text as the community's inspired record of its encounter with God.
- 6
What is the hermeneutical circle?
Model answer
The hermeneutical circle is the observation that a reader understands the parts of a text through a sense of the whole while forming that sense of the whole from the parts, so interpretation moves between the two rather than beginning from nothing.
