Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What evidence is there in these narratives for a prophetic movement?

    Model answer

The narratives refer to companies of prophets, called the sons of the prophets, living in groups at Bethel, Jericho and by the Jordan. Elijah and Elisha therefore belong to a wider prophetic community rather than standing entirely alone.

  2. 2

    How does Elijah call Elisha?

    Model answer

Elijah finds Elisha ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen and throws his mantle over him as he passes.

  3. 3

What does Elisha request of Elijah in 2 Kings 2, and what does the request mean?

    Model answer

Elisha asks for a double share of Elijah's spirit. A double share was the portion of an eldest son, so the request is to be recognised as Elijah's heir rather than to be twice as powerful.

  4. 4

How is Elijah taken from Elisha?

    Model answer

A chariot of fire and horses of fire separate the two, and Elijah ascends in a whirlwind. Elisha cries out, father, father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen.

  5. 5

What is at stake on Mount Carmel in 1 Kings 18?

    Model answer

The contest settles which deity is God in Israel. Elijah demands that the people stop limping between two opinions and choose between the LORD and Baal.

  6. 6

How does Elijah conduct the contest on Carmel?

    Model answer

Two bulls are prepared with no fire set under them. The prophets of Baal call from morning until noon and cut themselves without answer, while Elijah repairs the altar of the LORD with twelve stones, digs a trench, drenches the offering with water and prays, and fire falls and consumes the offering, the wood, the stones and the water.
