- 1
What is known of the life of Irenaeus?
Model answer
Irenaeus came from Smyrna in Asia Minor and heard Polycarp teach as a boy, which gave him a personal link to the generation of the apostles. Irenaeus later served as a presbyter at Lyons in Gaul and became its bishop after Pothinus died in the persecution of AD 177.
- 2
What are the two surviving works of Irenaeus?
Model answer
His major work is usually called Against Heresies, in five books, written about AD 180, whose full title describes it as the detection and overthrow of knowledge falsely so called. The shorter Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching was lost for centuries and rediscovered in an Armenian version in 1904.
- 3
How is Against Heresies organised?
Model answer
The first two books describe the Gnostic systems in detail and refute them, on the principle that to expose such teaching is largely to defeat it. The remaining three books argue positively from scripture and from the tradition of the churches for the Christian account of God, Christ and salvation.
- 4
Why is Irenaeus a valuable but limited source for Gnosticism?
Model answer
His descriptions are the fullest early account of the Valentinian and other systems, and the Nag Hammadi texts have confirmed much of his outline. Irenaeus is nevertheless a hostile witness who selects what is easiest to ridicule, so his reports need to be read alongside the Gnostic texts themselves.
- 5
What is Irenaeus' doctrine of recapitulation?
Model answer
Irenaeus teaches that Christ sums up and goes back over the whole of human history in himself, passing through every stage of human life and reversing at each point what went wrong in Adam. Christ's obedience on the tree therefore undoes Adam's disobedience at the tree, and Mary's obedience undoes the disobedience of Eve.
- 6
How does Irenaeus defend the goodness of creation?
Model answer
Irenaeus insists that the God who made the world is the same God who redeems it, and that scripture knows of no other. Salvation is therefore the healing and completion of creation rather than an escape from it, which is the reverse of the Gnostic account.
