Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Outline Cyprian's background and rise to office.
Model answer
Cyprian was born at Carthage about AD 200 into a wealthy pagan family and was trained and employed as a teacher of rhetoric. Cyprian was converted in middle life, sold much of his property for the poor, and was elected bishop of Carthage within about two years of his baptism, over the objections of five senior presbyters whose hostility troubled the rest of his episcopate.
- 2
What were the main crises of Cyprian's episcopate?
Model answer
Cyprian faced the Decian persecution and the bitter dispute about readmitting those who had lapsed, the rival schisms of Felicissimus at Carthage and Novatian at Rome, a devastating plague, and the quarrel with Stephen of Rome about baptism. Cyprian was exiled under Valerian and beheaded at Carthage in September AD 258.
- 3
What is the central claim of On the Unity of the Catholic Church?
Model answer
Cyprian argues that the church is one and cannot be divided, so that whoever separates from it is cut off from salvation. Cyprian states that no one can have God for their Father who does not have the church for their mother.
- 4
What images does Cyprian use for the unity of the church?
Model answer
Cyprian compares the church to the sun, which sends out many rays but has one light, to a tree with many branches and one root, and to a spring feeding many streams. Cyprian also appeals to the seamless robe of Christ, which the soldiers would not tear.
- 5
Why does Cyprian regard schism as worse than persecution?
Model answer
Persecution attacks the church from outside and produces martyrs, whereas schism destroys it from within while claiming the Christian name. Cyprian therefore argues that one who is not in the church cannot be a martyr, and that not even the shedding of blood can wash away the guilt of dividing it.
- 6
How does Cyprian handle the position of Peter in On the Unity?
Model answer
Cyprian argues that Christ gave the commission first to Peter alone in order to show that the church is one and that its origin is a single source. Cyprian immediately adds that the other apostles were of equal honour and power, so the argument establishes unity rather than the superiority of any one see.
