Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the meaning of the word masjid.
Model answer
Masjid means a place of prostration, which names the mosque by what happens in it rather than by its architecture.
- 2
What was the first mosque like?
Model answer
The Prophet's mosque at Medina was a plain rectangular courtyard of mud brick with a shaded area of palm trunks and thatch along one side, and its simplicity is still cited as the standard against which lavish building is measured.
- 3
Describe the prayer hall.
Model answer
The prayer hall is a large open carpeted space with no seating, no altar and no images of living beings, so that worshippers can form straight rows and prostrate together facing one direction.
- 4
Define the mihrab.
Model answer
The mihrab is the niche set into the wall facing Mecca, which marks the qiblah so that the congregation knows the direction of prayer and which often amplifies the imam's voice.
- 5
Define the minbar.
Model answer
The minbar is the raised pulpit of several steps from which the imam delivers the Friday sermon, standing so that the congregation can see and hear.
- 6
What is the purpose of the dome?
Model answer
The dome carries the sound of the imam's voice through a large hall without amplification and gives a sense of space above the worshippers, and it is widely understood to represent the vault of heaven over the community at prayer.
