Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who are the Apostolic Fathers?
Model answer
The Apostolic Fathers are Christian writers of the late first and early second centuries who were thought to have known the apostles or their immediate hearers. Their works form the earliest layer of Christian literature outside the New Testament.
- 2
Which writings are usually included among the Apostolic Fathers?
Model answer
The collection normally includes 1 and 2 Clement, the seven letters of Ignatius, Polycarp's Letter to the Philippians and the Martyrdom of Polycarp, the Didache, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias. The Epistle to Diognetus is often printed with them, though it belongs with the apologists in style.
- 3
What kind of writings are the Apostolic Fathers, and what does that mean for the way they are used?
Model answer
The Apostolic Fathers are letters, sermons, manuals and visions written for particular occasions rather than systematic theology. Their value lies in being direct evidence of what churches were doing and arguing about in the generation after the apostles.
- 4
What are the main concerns of the Apostolic Fathers?
Model answer
The Apostolic Fathers are preoccupied with the unity and order of the church, the authority of its leaders, the reality of the incarnation against those who denied it, moral instruction and the expectation of Christ's return. The prominence of church order shows a movement adjusting to life without the apostles.
- 5
What is 1 Clement and why is it important?
Model answer
1 Clement is a letter sent from the church at Rome to the church at Corinth in about AD 96, dealing with a dispute in which presbyters had been deposed. The letter is the earliest surviving Christian writing outside the New Testament and shows one church intervening in the affairs of another.
- 6
Who was Ignatius of Antioch?
Model answer
Ignatius was bishop of Antioch in Syria in the early second century and is counted the second or third holder of that see. Ignatius called himself Theophorus, the God-bearer.
