An Introduction to Themes in the Old Testament
Human experience: exclusivity, leadership and the prophetic voice
- 3 things to know
- AS
Overview
Religious exclusivism, religious inclusivism and relativistic age.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What connection is drawn between the covenant and prophetic texts and modern human rights?
What problem arises when opposing religious groups each claim to know the divine will?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What problem arises when opposing religious groups each claim to know the divine will?
Model answer
Each group appeals to the same kind of authority, so there is no neutral standpoint from which to adjudicate between them. Sincere conviction on both sides can then produce division, persecution or violence.
- 2
What is religious exclusivism?
Model answer
Exclusivism is the position that saving truth is found in one tradition. On that view its teaching and its community are the necessary route to a right relationship with God.
- 3
What is religious inclusivism?
Model answer
Inclusivism holds that one tradition carries the fullest truth while people outside it may still share in that truth. Those outside may be included without having recognised the source of what they receive.
- 4
Give the strongest argument for religious exclusivity.
Model answer
A tradition that claims revelation cannot treat its central claims as optional without emptying them of content. Clear boundaries also protect a small community's identity, and the post-exilic community might not have survived without them.
- 5
Give the strongest argument for religious inclusivity.
Model answer
Confining God's concern to one group is difficult to reconcile with belief in one creator of all people. Texts such as Isaiah 56 and Amos 9:7 make that argument from inside the tradition rather than against it.
- 6
What religious responsibilities do these texts place on a ruler?
Model answer
A ruler is expected to worship God alone, to read and keep the law, and to refuse the trappings of absolute power. Authority is held under God rather than over the community.
