Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the name Shi'a mean?
Model answer
Shi'a is short for Shi'at Ali, the party of Ali, and it names those who held that leadership of the community belonged to Ali and his descendants.
- 2
Explain the Shi'a doctrine of the Imamate.
Model answer
The Imamate is the belief that God appoints a leader from the Prophet's family in every age, designated by his predecessor, preserved from sin and error, and entrusted with the authoritative interpretation of the Qur'an, so that the Imamate is an article of faith and not merely a form of government.
- 3
Describe the Twelvers.
Model answer
The Twelvers, or Ithna Ashariyya, are the largest Shi'a body, who recognise twelve Imams beginning with Ali and ending with Muhammad al-Mahdi, and they form the majority in Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Bahrain and large communities in Lebanon, Pakistan and India.
- 4
What do Twelver Shi'a Muslims believe about the Twelfth Imam?
Model answer
Twelver Shi'a Muslims believe that the Twelfth Imam did not die but was withdrawn by God into occultation, at first communicating through named representatives and then in a greater concealment that continues, and that he will return as the Mahdi to fill the earth with justice as it has been filled with oppression.
- 5
How does Sunni belief about the Mahdi differ?
Model answer
Many Sunni Muslims also expect a Mahdi who will restore justice before the end of time, but they do not identify him with a hidden Imam already born, and the belief carries far less weight in Sunni religious life.
- 6
Describe the Seveners.
Model answer
The Seveners, or Isma'ilis, separated over the succession to the sixth Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, following his son Isma'il rather than Musa al-Kazim; they founded the Fatimid caliphate in Egypt, and the Nizari Isma'ilis today follow the Aga Khan as their living Imam.
