Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was dual power?
Model answer
The uneasy sharing of authority in 1917 between the Provisional Government, which claimed legal succession, and the Petrograd Soviet, which controlled the garrison and the railways.
- 2
What did Soviet Order No. 1 do?
Model answer
It instructed soldiers to obey the Provisional Government only where the Soviet agreed, and to elect committees in their units, which broke the officers' authority.
- 3
What were the fatal mistakes of the Provisional Government?
Model answer
It stayed in the war, postponed land redistribution and elections, and so left the two demands that mattered most to soldiers and peasants unanswered.
- 4
What did Lenin argue in the April Theses?
Model answer
No support for the Provisional Government, an immediate end to the war, land to the peasants, and all power to the soviets.
- 5
What was the effect of the summer offensive of 1917?
Model answer
Its collapse discredited Kerensky, accelerated desertion and land seizure, and produced the July disturbances in Petrograd.
- 6
How did the Kornilov affair help the Bolsheviks?
Model answer
Kerensky armed the workers to stop a supposed military coup, so the Bolsheviks gained weapons, credit as defenders of the revolution and majorities in the soviets.
