Enclosure and the consolidation of estates
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Why enclosure caused such anger even where it was lawful, difference between enclosure by agreement and enclosure that provoked protest and two Tudor statutes directed against depopulating enclosure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name two Tudor statutes directed against depopulating enclosure.
What did Wolsey's enclosure commission of 1517 do?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define enclosure.
Model answer
The replacement of open fields and common land by hedged or ditched fields held in severalty, so that one occupier had exclusive use of the ground.
- 2
Distinguish enclosure from engrossing.
Model answer
Enclosure changed the way land was held and fenced; engrossing merged two or more farms into one, so that a farmhouse fell empty and a family lost its living.
- 3
Why did landlords want to enclose in the early Tudor period?
Model answer
Wool prices were high and pasture needed far less labour than arable, so converting to sheep gave a better return on rent with fewer tenants.
- 4
What did Thomas More say about sheep in Utopia?
Model answer
He wrote that sheep, once so gentle, had become devourers of men, eating up whole fields, houses and towns, which became the standard image of depopulating enclosure.
- 5
Explain why enclosure caused such anger even where it was lawful.
Model answer
It broke customary rights of grazing and gleaning that had never been written down, and it appeared to place private profit above the duty of a landlord to maintain his tenants and the commonwealth.
- 6
What was the difference between enclosure by agreement and enclosure that provoked protest?
Model answer
Where all the tenants of a manor consented and consolidated their strips, enclosure was uncontroversial; trouble came when a lord enclosed the commons, evicted tenants or converted arable to pasture on his own authority.
