  1. 1

Why did the United States Senate reject the Treaty of Versailles?

    Model answer

It objected to Article X of the League Covenant as committing the country to foreign wars without congressional consent, and Wilson refused compromise.

  2. 2

Did rejecting the League mean total withdrawal from world affairs?

    Model answer

No: the United States took part in the Washington Naval Conference, the Dawes and Young Plans and the Kellogg-Briand Pact, so it avoided commitments rather than involvement.

  3. 3

    What were the Neutrality Acts?

    Model answer

Laws of 1935 to 1937 forbidding arms sales and loans to belligerents, intended to keep the country out of another European war.

  4. 4

    What was Lend-Lease?

    Model answer

The 1941 programme supplying arms and materials to Britain and later the USSR without immediate payment.

  5. 5

    What was the Atlantic Charter?

    Model answer

The 1941 statement of war aims agreed by Roosevelt and Churchill, including self-determination and free trade.

  6. 6

What brought the United States into the Second World War?

    Model answer

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, followed by German and Italian declarations of war.
