Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Give three reasons why the Crown moved to unite Wales with England in the 1530s.

    Model answer

The disorder of the March, the need for a uniform legal system to enforce the royal supremacy, and the wish to close a possible back door for foreign invasion or rebellion.

  2. 2

How did the break with Rome increase the pressure for union?

    Model answer

The supremacy had to be enforced by oath and statute throughout the realm, and that was impossible while Marcher lordships stood outside the ordinary machinery of English law.

  3. 3

What did the Act of 1536 do to the Marcher lordships?

    Model answer

It abolished them, absorbing their territory either into existing Welsh counties or into five newly created shires.

  4. 4

Name the counties created out of the Marcher lordships in 1536.

    Model answer

Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, Brecknockshire and Monmouthshire.

  5. 5

How was Monmouthshire treated differently from the rest of Wales?

    Model answer

It was placed under the English legal system and attached to the Oxford assize circuit rather than to the Welsh Great Sessions.

  6. 6

What representation in Parliament did Wales gain under the Acts of Union?

    Model answer

For the first time Welsh shires and shire boroughs returned their own members, giving Wales twenty-four MPs.
