  1. 1

What were the main organs of the League of Nations?

    Model answer

An Assembly of all members, a Council of permanent and elected members, a permanent Secretariat, a Court of International Justice and the International Labour Organisation.

  2. 2

What weakened the League from the beginning?

    Model answer

The United States never joined, Germany and the Soviet Union were excluded at first, decisions required unanimity, and its only weapons short of war were condemnation and economic sanctions, since it had no armed force of its own.

  3. 3

Give two examples of the League's successes in the 1920s.

    Model answer

It settled the dispute over the Åland Islands between Sweden and Finland, and it organised relief and resettlement for refugees and prisoners of war.

  4. 4

How did the League respond to the Manchurian crisis?

    Model answer

It sent a commission of inquiry, took over a year to report, and when it condemned the seizure Japan simply left the League, as Italy had already shown over Corfu in 1923 that a great power could ignore it.

  5. 5

Why was the Abyssinian crisis fatal to the League?

    Model answer

Sanctions on Italy excluded oil and the Suez Canal stayed open, while the secret Hoare-Laval Pact showed Britain and France ready to hand Mussolini most of the country, so the League was exposed as both feeble and dishonest.

  6. 6

How did the Depression contribute to the coming of war?

    Model answer

It destroyed the co-operation of the 1920s, brought extreme parties to power, encouraged tariffs and autarky, and made states look for solutions in territorial expansion.
