- 1
Give three reasons for the decline of the south Wales coal industry after 1918.
Model answer
Overseas customers developed their own coalfields or bought elsewhere, ships and industry turned increasingly to oil, and Welsh pits were old, deep and costly to work.
- 2
Why was the export trade in Welsh coal so vulnerable?
Model answer
The coalfield depended overwhelmingly on foreign sales, so any loss of overseas markets hit it far harder than the inland coalfields of England.
- 3
What did the Sankey Commission recommend in 1919, and what did the government do?
Model answer
Its chairman recommended nationalisation of the mines, but the government rejected it and returned the pits to their owners.
- 4
What followed the decontrol of the mines in 1921?
Model answer
The owners demanded lower wages and district agreements, the miners refused and were locked out, and after three months they returned largely on the owners' terms.
- 5
What was Black Friday, and why is it remembered bitterly in the coalfield?
Model answer
The day in April 1921 when the railwaymen and transport workers withdrew from the promised sympathetic strike, leaving the miners to fight alone.
- 6
How did the return to the gold standard in 1925 damage the coal industry?
Model answer
Restoring the pound at its pre-war value made British exports dearer abroad, so owners tried to recover their costs by cutting wages and lengthening hours.
