Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why was 1549 such a dangerous year for the government?

    Model answer

Two major rebellions broke out at once, in the south-west and in East Anglia, while England was at war with Scotland and France, the coinage was debased and prices were rising steeply.

  2. 2

    What sparked the Western Rebellion?

    Model answer

The imposition of the new English Book of Common Prayer at Whitsun 1549, which replaced the familiar Latin mass and was resisted violently in Devon and Cornwall.

  3. 3

What did the western rebels demand?

    Model answer

The restoration of the old service and of the Six Articles, the return of images and ceremonies, the recall of the English Bible, and the reinstatement of the mass in Latin.

  4. 4

What was the Cornish objection to the English service?

    Model answer

Many Cornishmen understood no English, so a service in English was no more intelligible to them than Latin had been, and the rebels said so explicitly.

  5. 5

Describe the main military action of the Western Rebellion.

    Model answer

The rebels besieged Exeter for several weeks, and Lord Russell's army, strengthened by foreign mercenaries, relieved the city and destroyed the rebel force in a series of engagements.

  6. 6

How severe was the suppression in the south-west?

    Model answer

Several thousand rebels were killed in the fighting and its aftermath, and leaders including the vicar of St Thomas at Exeter were hanged, some from their own church towers.
