Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Explain what Edward VI's Devise for the Succession was.

    Model answer

The document by which the dying king attempted to divert the crown from his half-sisters to Lady Jane Grey and her heirs, in order to keep England Protestant.

  2. 2

Why did the Duke of Northumberland support the Devise?

    Model answer

He had governed in Edward's name and had married his own son Guildford Dudley to Jane, so a Grey succession preserved both his religion and his power, while Mary's accession would destroy him.

  3. 3

Why is Jane Grey called the nine days queen?

    Model answer

She was proclaimed on Edward's death and displaced within little more than a week, after which Mary was proclaimed instead.

  4. 4

How did Mary secure the throne in 1553?

    Model answer

She avoided capture, went to Framlingham in Suffolk, proclaimed herself queen and gathered support from the East Anglian gentry and commons, while the Council in London changed sides and Northumberland's army melted away.

  5. 5

What does Mary's success show about attitudes to the succession?

    Model answer

That legitimacy counted for more than religion with most of the political nation, and that even Protestant gentry preferred Henry VIII's lawful daughter to a claim manufactured by a hated minister.

  6. 6

What happened to Northumberland and to Jane?

    Model answer

Northumberland was executed within weeks, recanting his Protestantism on the scaffold; Jane was spared at first, then executed early in 1554 after Wyatt's rebellion made her existence dangerous.
