When were the monasteries dissolved?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How did the Church relieve poverty before the Reformation?
Model answer
Through monastic almsgiving at the gate, hospitals and almshouses under religious control, the hospitality of the greater houses, and the parish's own collections and bequests.
- 2
Why did medieval Christians give to the poor?
Model answer
Because charity was a good work believed to assist the soul of the giver, and doles at funerals bought the prayers of the poor for the dead.
- 3
When were the monasteries dissolved?
Model answer
The smaller houses were suppressed from 1536 and the greater houses surrendered between 1538 and 1540.
- 4
What was the effect of the dissolution on the relief of poverty?
Model answer
It removed a source of casual almsgiving, hospitality and hospital care, and put many former servants and dependants out of place, though historians disagree about how much the monasteries had really been giving.
- 5
What is the case that the dissolution mattered less than was once thought?
Model answer
Surveys suggest the houses spent only a small share of their income on alms, and much of it went in indiscriminate doles at the gate rather than in sustained relief, so their loss was serious mainly in the north and in Wales, where they were the only provision for miles.
- 6
What happened to the chantries, and why did that matter to the poor?
Model answer
They were dissolved in 1547, and with them went endowed doles, some schools and almshouses, and the fraternities attached to them.
