Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why did Charles I have to rely on prerogative revenues after 1629?

    Model answer

Without a Parliament there were no subsidies, so the Crown had to live on customs, feudal dues and any other right it could revive.

  2. 2

    Define distraint of knighthood.

    Model answer

The revival of an old obligation on men with land above a certain value to be knighted, so that those who had not been could be fined.

  3. 3

    Define forest fines.

    Model answer

Fines imposed after the boundaries of the royal forests were reasserted at their ancient extent, penalising landowners who had long since encroached on them.

  4. 4

Why did the revival of obsolete rights cause such anger?

    Model answer

It punished men for offences no one had regarded as offences within living memory, so it looked like taxation dressed up as law.

  5. 5

How did the Crown use monopolies in the 1630s?

    Model answer

Grants of exclusive trade were made to corporations rather than individuals, evading the statute against monopolies while raising money and raising prices.

  6. 6

State the original purpose of Ship Money.

    Model answer

A levy on coastal towns to provide ships for the defence of the realm in an emergency.
