Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the component parts of the Oireachtas and of Parliament.
Model answer
The Oireachtas consists of the President, Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann. Parliament consists of the Crown, the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
- 2
Compare the sizes of the two lower chambers.
Model answer
Dáil Éireann returned 174 TDs at the 2024 general election, while the House of Commons has 650 members. The Commons is far larger both in absolute terms and relative to the population it serves.
- 3
Compare the sizes of the two upper chambers.
Model answer
Seanad Éireann has exactly 60 members fixed by the Constitution. The House of Lords has no fixed size and its membership has run at around eight hundred.
- 4
Why does the absence of a size limit matter in the House of Lords?
Model answer
A Prime Minister can nominate new peers without limit, so the composition of the second chamber can be adjusted by patronage. The Irish Taoiseach's power of appointment is capped at eleven of sixty senators.
- 5
Compare the maximum terms of the two lower houses.
Model answer
Both have a maximum term of five years. The Dáil's limit is set by statute inside a constitutional maximum of seven years, and the Commons limit rests on statute.
- 6
Compare how each lower house is dissolved.
Model answer
Dáil Éireann is dissolved by the President on the advice of the Taoiseach, and the President may refuse a Taoiseach who has lost majority support. Parliament is dissolved by the monarch on the request of the Prime Minister, and the prerogative power was restored by statute in 2022 after eleven years of fixed terms.
