  1. 1

    What is libertarian conservatism?

    Model answer

Libertarian conservatism is the strand of the ideology that combines a free market economy, a minimal role for the state in economic life and a strong emphasis on individual responsibility with a traditional conservative concern for order, authority and the nation.

  2. 2

    What is the New Right?

    Model answer

The New Right is the combination of neo-liberal economics with neo-conservative social policy which became influential in Britain and the United States from the late 1970s, favouring free markets, low taxation, a strong state on law, order and defence, and traditional morality.

  3. 3

What is neo-liberalism within the New Right?

    Model answer

Neo-liberalism is the economic element of the New Right: privatisation of state industries, deregulation, control of inflation through the money supply, reduction of trade union power, lower direct taxation and a smaller welfare state.

  4. 4

What is neo-conservatism within the New Right?

    Model answer

Neo-conservatism is the social element of the New Right: a strong state to uphold law and order, firm defence and national sovereignty, and the reassertion of traditional moral standards and family life against permissiveness.

  5. 5

What tension exists inside the New Right?

    Model answer

The free market element celebrates individual choice and the disruption of established ways of doing business, while the traditionalist element wants to preserve settled communities and moral standards, so the two can pull against each other.

  6. 6

How did Hayek influence New Right conservatism?

    Model answer

Hayek argued that central planning must lead towards the loss of political freedom, and that no planner can hold the dispersed knowledge that prices convey, which supplied an argument that markets are not merely efficient but a condition of liberty.
