- A2 Unit 2

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What follows politically from the organic view of society?
How does the organic view differ from the liberal contract view?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the organic view of society?
Model answer
The organic view treats society as a living whole whose parts depend on one another, rather than as a machine assembled from separate individuals. Institutions and classes are understood as organs that have grown together and serve the health of the whole.
- 2
How does the organic view differ from the liberal contract view?
Model answer
Liberals treat society as an association created by individuals for their own purposes and dissolvable by them. Conservatives treat society as prior to the individual, shaping the people born into it, so it cannot be redesigned by agreement.
- 3
What follows politically from the organic view of society?
Model answer
If society is an organism, then reform must be gradual and respectful of the connections between its parts, hierarchy and differentiated roles are natural rather than unjust, and loyalty to the whole is a duty rather than a matter of choice.
- 4
How do conservatives understand the individual in relation to society?
Model answer
Conservatives argue that individuals are formed by the families, communities and traditions into which they are born, so the isolated chooser assumed by liberal theory does not exist and identity is inherited before it is chosen.
- 5
What role does the family play in conservative thought?
Model answer
Conservatives treat the family as the primary institution of society, the place where children learn duty, restraint and affection, and the source of continuity between generations, which is why conservative policy has generally sought to strengthen it.
- 6
What is meant by the little platoon?
Model answer
Burke argued that to love the little platoon we belong to in society is the first principle of public affections, so attachment begins with family, neighbourhood and local institutions and grows outward to the nation.
