- 1
What do socialists mean by fraternity?
Model answer
Fraternity is the sense of comradeship and mutual obligation between people who see themselves as sharing a condition and a common humanity, expressed in the willingness to support one another rather than to compete.
- 2
Why is community central to socialist thought?
Model answer
Socialists argue that individuals are formed by the society around them and that a good life is lived with others, so the quality of the community, rather than only the freedom of its members, is the proper measure of a society.
- 3
What is the socialist case for co-operation over competition?
Model answer
Socialists argue that co-operation pools effort and knowledge and produces more than rivalry does, that competition wastes resources through duplication and advertising, and that a competitive society teaches people to regard each other as obstacles.
- 4
What was the co-operative movement?
Model answer
The co-operative movement, founded in Britain by the Rochdale Pioneers in 1844, established shops and later factories owned by their members and distributing profits as a dividend, demonstrating that enterprises could be run without private shareholders.
- 5
What did Robert Owen attempt at New Lanark?
Model answer
Owen ran the mills at New Lanark from 1800 with shorter hours, no child labour below the age of ten, decent housing and schooling, and argued that treating workers well was both morally right and commercially successful.
- 6
What were the utopian socialists?
Model answer
The utopian socialists, including Owen, Charles Fourier and Henri de Saint-Simon, proposed model co-operative communities as demonstrations of a better way of living. Marx and Engels named them utopian because they appealed to goodwill rather than to class struggle.
